One of my stories of Starwood XXI involves the campsite
I chose--out in the field behind Babylon Heights. It was the only place
I could find when I
arrived on Friday of Sirius. The last two years I'd camped up in the Quiet
Woods on the other side of the pond and never really got tight with anyone
back in there. I learned that camping out in the open was more conducive
to meeting people, forming bonds with groups that lasted the whole festival.
It turned out that Muruga's son Aaron and his friends were camped directly
across from me. They had extra 'guest' tents set up for some of the band
members too.
We all hung out together around their campfire almost every
night. But on
Thursday night, a few of us were vegetating around the fire, lazy from
dinner and a few bottles of mead/beer/etc., when Muruga walked up to say
hi. He sat awhile and had his talking drum with him. Soon he started to
play and then Martin (the band's keyboardist/flute and sax player who
was staying in one of the guest tents) joined in with his flute. There
were only about 4 of us left at that moment but I was so blow away by
being able to be present for a spontaneous jam with Muruga and Martin.
It will be one of my special Starwood memories for a very long time.
