Beginning Poi: Freedom of Flow

Freedom in Flow is an alternative for the traditional style (forward spin, butterfly, etc) in teaching beginning poi. The traditional style has been known to create a mind trap for people who are starting out with spinning poi and over time some spinners seem to 'plateau', feeling stuck with the moves they have learned and having trouble to advance from there. Freedom in Flow is ideal for people who are just getting started with spinning poi or for people who have experienced that 'plateau' and would like some ideas on how to get out of their spinning rut. In this workshop, we will focus on pendulums rather than the full spin. Pendulums are much more comfortable as a starting point as the poi are lightly swung from side to side and look much cooler than a full circle spin. We will experiment with the full range of movement, turns, same time vs. split time, full arm extensions, stalls and a lot of other basic moves that will help open up your mind to what is achievable with poi.

Fire Dancing Safety

This workshop will cover fire safety for fire performance. We will talk about the importance of a fire spotter, the equipment needed for fire safety, and all important information for having a safe fire spin. Fire dancing is NOT allowed at Starwood unless you would like to perform for the Starwood Bonfire on Saturday night. You must attend this workshop if you would like to perform for the Bonfire.

Fire Eating and Fire Fleshing

Astound your family! Blow your co-workers minds! Seduce that hot little number you've been checking out for a while! Fire eat your way to success! Instinctively, a normal human response to fire is to fear getting burned. Fire Eating is the perfect introduction to the fire performance arts. If you have never fire danced before than Fire Eating and Fleshing will serve as a comfortable gateway before you start spinning props with a bigger flame. Gaining the ability to feel comfortable enough to touch fire to your skin will help build your personal relationship with fire.

In this workshop you will be learning a variety of fire eating techniques/moves. We will explore the various ways to fire flesh (dragging fire across your skin) and fire transfers (dragging a line of fuel across your skin and then igniting it to create a trail of fire). As people are feeling more comfortable with the fire we will learn more advanced tricks. Towards the end of the workshop, when people are feeling more confident about fire eating and fire fleshing, we will explore working together with the techniques we learned. Hopefully we can pull off the sexy, yet difficult, tongue fire transfer! Ow ow!

There is a $5 fee to attend to this workshop as Paul will be providing the fuel. If you need a set of fire eating torches, he will be selling them for $40 a pair. You can buy them at the workshop or at his vending booth, Burning Passion.
