Jim  Scott

Jim Scott is a composer, guitarist, singer, songwriter and activist, who brings a warmth and humor with his well-crafted jazz and world music influenced songs. With a prodigious guitar mastery and clear voice, he encourages all to get involved with the messages and ideals of peace, justice and the earth that he raises. Formerly a member of the Paul Winter Consort, Jim was co-composer of their celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass and sang their anthem song “Common Ground.” He has toured the world, recorded a number of CDs of original music and published a growing line of choral works. He has provided instrumental soundtracks for several documentaries and the PBS series Body and Soul. A co-chair of the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for the Earth and co-creator of the Green Sanctuary program for churches to become more sustainable, Jim also compiled the Earth and Spirit Songbook, an anthology of over 100 songs of earth and peace. His own recordings and Sailing with the Moon include many of his eco-anthems. He has been artist in residence or visiting faculty at schools such as Oberlin College, and enjoys putting young people in touch with their innate creativity and the power of musical expression.

Improvisation and Harmony Making

From beginners to accomplished instrumentalists, we all can make beautiful and amazing music relying on our collective intuition, activating our creativity and feeling the power of attuned collaboration. Through free-form improvisation (games) with musical instruments and voices, in sound, movement and related arts, we create our safe play space to be in the moment to be prolifically creative making no judgments. As we celebrate together, the point is not for participants to be singled out to "perform," but rather to let ourselves be immersed in the process. All instruments welcome, including voice and body. Bring any musical instruments you think would be fun to use or share. Wear comfortable clothes to move and sit on the floor. Bring a cushion if you wish. Plan to have fun! No experience necessary.
