The Gnostic Mass

The Gnostic Mass, or Liber XV, was composed by Aleister Crowley in 1913 after seeing an Eastern Orthodox Mass in Moscow, Russia. It is often described as the central public and private ritual of the Ordo Templi Orientis. Even though the mass may be somewhat similar in structure to a traditional mass, it diverges greatly as a celebration of the principles of Thelema. Liber XV is performed with five officers including the Priest, Priestess, Deacon and the children (not actual children but adults robed in black and white), who play a role similar to acolytes. The focus of the rite is the blessing and consumption of the Host, the means by which participants may access the divine.
