Myth, Magic and Music
Many myths of the Ancients were preserved for us through classical music. As soon as the early Christian Church relaxed its hold on music, the late Medieval composers turned to mythology for their themes. From Claudio Monteverdis Orfeo in the 1500s through to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in the mid 1900s, music has invoked deities and celebrated the tales of our ancestors. This workshop is a brief survey of some of the invocations, myths and magic of the classical style of music, with an emphasis on the continuing allure of the Orpheus Myth.
