Trash and Recycling

Pack Green.

New York is a deposit state and we would urge everyone to take their empty beverage containers back to where they were purchased for the refund. Otherwise, PACK GREEN so we don't have to send everything to the landfill.

Please burn anything and everything you can. You will notice several campfires distributed liberally around Brushwood that can be used to burn things like paper, cardboard, and food scraps. This will cut the volume of things going into the landfill by about half!

Wash your dishes by getting water, taking it back to your site, washing dishes, and throwing the 'gray' (dirty) water no closer that 50' from a lake or stream, or your neighbor for that matter. Please do not wash dishes at the spigots or sinks!

Be Courteous! Pack Green!

As the Starwood Festival continues to grow both Brushwood and ACE staff are pressed by the large amounts of trash generated by our loving community. Please note the centers for trash disposal located conveniently all around the Brushwood site and follow the guidelines. Please, we all need to work together.

Did we remember to suggest that you Pack Green?

The sad tale of why we don't recycle as a festival. We used to, or rather, we tried. Individual compliance with rinsing and seperation of materials was poor, and countless hours were spent rinsing and sorting glass and cans and everything else recyclable in Chautauqua County. After several years the county had actually accepted a very small amount of this and basically tossed our clean recyclables in the landfill citing minor violations in protocol (a green bottle in the clear glass bag). It was not labor or cost effective. We have examined a number of solutions from one bag recycling/trash companies to citizen run efforts. We want to have a viable and ecologically sound but cost effective solution. One of these days...

Meanwhile, individuals and camps are certainly not discouraged from taking advantage of the county residential recycling program. The closest transfer station to Brushwood is the West County Transfer Station located on Route 76 near its intersection with Route 86 in Sherman . Their hours are Tuesday and Saturday ONLY from 7 am to 3 pm. http://co.chautauqua.ny.us/landfill/
